Acupuncture is Great for Tendinitis
Should I have acupuncture for tendinitis? Yes, acupuncture is an option in healing tendinitis.
Tendons are the fibrous cords that attach muscle to bone. Tendinitis is the inflammation of this tissue and occurs around your joints. Most of the time, tendinitis is a repetitive motion injury. The good news about tendinitis is that it can usually be healed 100%. The bad news is that it can take forever! Acupuncture and a few behavior modifications will hasten the healing process and get you back to your normal activities quicker than if you were to let it heal on its own.
The healing process for tendinitis is generally slow because the capillaries within the tendons are extremely small and sparse. It is, therefore, difficult to get fresh, healing, oxygenated blood into the tendon. With a few strategically-placed acupuncture needles and infrared heat, a patient may enjoy a more rapid recovery.
Patients may feel the urge to ice the area but I recommend definitely NOT icing. You will want to keep the area warm to widen the capillaries as much as possible, flood the tissue with blood, and let your body's innate healing capabilities take over. This process may make the nearest joints feel heavy and that is okay. The patient may even want to soak in a warm bath 2 - 3 times a week until the injury heals.
I like to recommend massage and light stretching as additional therapies for tendinitis.
